I wondered if it's possible to buy an adaptor to change the in car iPod connector to fit my Walkman? Or is that too simple and Apple really do have a monopoly?

Are you sure that the in car is an Apple Product and not a general MP3 connection .
If it is a MP3 connection and the Walkman plays MP3 then it should work .
Dont confuse Apple and IPod with the format MP3 that is not owned by Apple .

No, it's definitely an iPod connection. I can't connect it to the Walkman - it was the first thing I tried (with a tiny grain of hope!).0

What car has this Ipod connector .
Question does Walkman play MP3 or that old Sony format . Question is what is an Ipod connector and why would all manufactures fit an Ipod connection and not an mp3 connector .

What does the connection look like. Is it a standard mini jack or some type of multipin connector?"...IT'S FRUITY!"0

a proper ipod conection allows you to control the ipod via the headunit
mp3 connectors are just line inputs to play whatever the source mp3 player is playing
i wanted the full control set up so went with an ipod0 -

I see , But dont believe and have not seen all manufacturers putting Ipod connections in cars . Audio connections yes specific ipod connectors no .I pod player cradle optional extra yes .
The last one i saw today was a standard connection for MP3 players .
If the car has a standard connection and the walkman outputs standard mp3 files then its possible to connect even if the walkman has a non standard output .
I would even guess that a walkman and an ipod connection exists .
If i knew what the car model was i might be able to help more .

Check maplins.co.uk they do a standard ipod connector to 3.5mm stereo plug .
May fit as reverse order ie walkman to 3.5mm and other end into ipod socket on the car .

No Apple do not have a monopoly general connector is standard stereo cable input .
Some models may offer a dedicated IPod connector and some even offer it as an extra on build or over the parts counter .

A lot of new ICE devices are shipping with USB connectors, you can basically plug anything USB storage related into it. I have a small 500gig usb2 hard drive plugged into mine which gives me more albums than I can shake a stick at
The benefit of USB over a brand specific thing like apple is you can get adapters for ipods if you really want them. All the normal mp3/4 players simply plug straight in, no audio adapter required.0
