student car insurance - not during term time

is it possible to get get insurance that will only cover me for the times of the year im not in university?

i know many insurance companies allow you to freeze your insurance, but they seem only to offer refund at the end of the year or a reduction if you renew. I was hoping i could pay for a year and then use up that 'year' over a longer period, ie 4 months in the summer, a month over christmas etc.

Very much doubt it. Think about it: presumably you still want the car covered for fire and theft even if you're not driving it and it's parked off road. And if it's not off road it needs to be insured - taxed is not enough! Trust me on this, our car was 'winged' by a driver trying to evade the police, and the police asked ME to show my insurance, because the car was on the road!

The only way would be to declare it SORN and cancel insurance, but you don't always get a refund for cancelling insurance part way through the year.
