Proof of NCB

Hi - hoping for a little advice and reassurance from you wonderful people
In February I swapped insurers from Barclays (Norwich Union) back to Churchill whom I'd been with the year previously. Last week I recieved a somewhat terse letter, from Churchill asking for the Renewel notice from Barclays to prove my (five years protected) NCB. After sending all the documentation I had relating to the old policy - (I seem to have shreded the renewal notice as I'd already decided to switch back to Churchill for favourable excess) Churchill say what I sent wasn't sufficent and now Barclays have kindly offered to provide me with a copy of the renewal notice to send to Churchill. I have never been asked in 15 odd years of driving to provide proof of NCB.
But my question is - don't insurance companies share this sort of information between themselves? It feels like Churchill are trying to put the frighteners on me (as I can prove my entitlement) to avoid someone somewhere having to make a call to my previous insurer.
Is this the norm now - having to supply your own proof?
Sorry to vent...

Hi,
Yes, it is the norm.
The reason why you've probably not been asked for it before, is because some insurers only check a percentage (10% for example).
Please don't feel like they're trying to put the frighteners on you - I'm sure it's not designed to do that.

All insurers ask for proof of NCB because they want proof that you have indeed been claim free for the amount of years that you have stated, remember they have given a discount to reflect this so therefore its normal practice for the insured to provide proof. If proof was never required then everyone would just say they have max ncb and get discounts that they werent entitled too.
Im sure they werent trying to put the frighteners on you, its just a little nudge to let you know they need it asap, If you are at all worried then call Churchill and provide them some details of the phone, e.g. policy number, name of insurer, phone number etc and most companies will call to verify this over the phone whilst they wait for the proof in writing.0
