I wish I had read this before, I have just bought the Norton 2005 version online instead of just the updates. I dont know if there is any connection but I am now getting emails that have something like my email address but not quite - how do these get through? And almost an email a day, subject matter - Re [a number]. Anyone else had these? I just delete them unopened but they're annoying.

You've obviously downloaded the wrong one if there was a trial period involved.

You should use the TOTALLY FREE edition that is for personal use only.

No trial period, no expiry date, no payments and NO VIRUSES !!!

Yeah, it sounds like you downloaded AVG Pro, which has some extra features (not all that useful to home users).

The latest free version is http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup/avg70free_338a597.exe
  • Try not to get these mixed up as they are both on the same site!

Rafi, there may well be a connection. When you entered your email when signing up to Norton 2005 were there any tick boxes for passing information onto 3rd companies?

I'm afraid once you're in the spam cycle its hard to get out as when pressing "do not email me again", they stop emailing you but 5 other companies start! ouch.

What version of Norton Antivirus do you have :) The exact version.

    Thank you:

I am led to believe you can uninstall the anti virus by going into Add/Remove programs. This has failed for many however. If an older version than 2004 there is an official Utility from Norton to be able to do this. It can be located:
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606

That has full instructions but rather complex:

    There are also removal instructions here;
    http://www.cit.cornell.edu/helpdesk/win/nav/uninstallnav.html
This uses add/remove programs window :)

Its supposed to be Norton AV 2003

    sez version 9.05.15
    Norton AV (OEM) for NEC(90)

Crumbs...it looks more scary the more I look into it...they don't tell ya all this when ya buy the flipping thing do they!!!!!

(oooop sorry....thanks for the links and the offer but I'm in Yorkshire unfortunately  )

  • Shame! I used to live in Leeds. Moved down south literally a month ago! darn.

Anyway, you should be able to do this:
Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Norton Antivirus (or similar name) > Uninstall.

Give that a try. If not, find the CD with the norton installation on. Stick it in your machine, and when the installation thing comes up, see if there is a "remove" or "uninstall" option. If there is a modify option click that and see if you can remove it in there.

    Good luck :)

Used to use AVG 7 free but now use Avast, very efficient and cool little voice tells you when virus database has been updated automatically http://www.avast.com/eng/down_home.html

Thanks a lot for the info..got about 2 wks left with Norton so will try and sort it all out next week-end.

Been thinking about the change-over time though and what sequence to do things in? Can I download AVG to disk before I uninstall the Norton so that I'm not downloading without any AV in place? Presumably its a case of uninstalling Norton and then installing AVG and not the other way round? Anything else I need to know???

Thanks a lot for the help ashamed05.gif

  • I suppose its quite typical that I suppose!

You can install AVG Before removing Norton Anti virus. That's what I did personally. When installing AVG you must requesta license code thus receive emails and copy and paste etc.. its not hard to do, but it takes longer than a minute to install AVG. I would advise you however to try removing norton first :)

If the add/remove function is there, just use that. You will have norton things left over in the background of your pc, and they can be removed but it is rather a hard job. I will be coming back to leeds much over the next few months. You should be ok but if you ever get stuck then just send me an email. I'll pm you with my address.

    Good luck with everything.
