  • which fan?

If its a case fan its very cheap and easy. Buy a big 120mm fan (less revolutions for same airflow as an 80mm fan so quiter operation. Check a 120mm fan will fit before you buy it though. Simply unplug the PC, earth yourself by touching the case, unplug the fans power cord from the motherboard, unscrew the fan from the case. Then put the new fan in place and connect it back up. Rubber washers can reduce vibration and hence noise. Easy peasy

If its the fan inside your power supply dont bother, if its the fan cooling your heatsink on your CPU its a bit trickier and more expensive. I can explain/advise on that if this is the case

Try cleaning it and lubricating it with WD40 or silicon oil.

DO NOT SPRAY ANY OIL ONTO THE FAN.

Remove fan clean it NOTE THE WAY IT WAS AROUND (air flow), you will see a paper cover in the centre remove that.

If the oil is in a spray can spray it into the cap, then when you have some in the cap dip a small screw driver into the oil move it to fan and let it drip into the bearings, do that 2 or 3 times.

Clean up the area where the paper goes and refit paper, or use some sticky tape.

If it is still noisy after order a new one.

I do all mine every 6 months, never replaced a fan so far.

I found that a solid block of dust can be hidden between the CPU fan and the heat sink; my fan became quiet again after I removed this. Blasting with compressed air will not dislodge this, have to remove the fan & look, use a toothpick to scrape out between heat sink fins of needed.

On another computer I found that replacing the cheap fan with with a quiet fan helped a lot - the new one is deeper, runs a bit slower and is better quality, still fitted exactly onto the existing heat sink.

You could take a look here http://www.quietpc.com/gb-en-gbp/products/92mmfans

I got mine from http://www.dorothybradbury.co.uk/ for about £8.50 inc P&P.

A very fine, soft bristled paintbrush cleans fans fastest and easiest in my experience, and cotton buds are superb at getting gunk out from heatsink blades/fins.

Compressed air is VERY cold and can cause problems if accidently sprayed onto component chips. Remeber if you have to remove the heatsink to replace the thermal compound when reseating it.
There's someone in my head, but it's not me
