    That's what I thought.
    In fact I think it is a criminal offence in France to write a cheque knowing that there are no funds in the account to meet it.

    You are quite right. Like the UK, acceptance of cheques is becoming less common many physical retailers don't want the hassle and ask for ID as well.

    We also have RIB's and TIP's here which are similar to direct debits.

    Why not just elect one person as kitty holder and have him/her pay for all shared expenses?

    If you trust them enough to share a joint account, then presumably you would trust them enough to be custodian of the funds?

    however whether people think it is right or wrong i don't seem to have any help as to whether or not there is a bank account available.

    if there isn't then we will just open the account between two of us.

    I agree-it's crazy to open an account for a week's holiday...I hope you know these people very very well and their credit rating is excellent, or you may find next time you go to open an account you get declined.
