If you are atall bothered about picture quality, avoid these sets at all cost.
Using the 'compare' bit of ebuyer, it would appear that few if any of the sub-2 grand ones do better than 852x480.0 -
Ignore the comment about 576 lines. Each plasma has a processor to compensate for the varying amounts of data broadcast. It can do HD of sorts anyway.
Go to your local AV shop (or currys / comet etc) and take a look at one of these bad boys... you will be impressed (especially for a grand)0 -
Makro have a swisstek 42" plasma (480 lines) for 881 quid Inc VAT.
Also a goodmans 42" 480lines for 1057 quid with freeview integrated? or 940 quid without freeview?
here is a nice comparison page of lots of different plasmas unfortunately its a pdf page.

Whilst I do agree that anyone looking for a "high def experience" stay away from these models, and I do agree that the price of these 852x480 displays is going to plummet over the next 3-months, 6-months and next year...I must say that some people just want a flat panel for the look of it and space saving aspect over CRT TVs - if you only intend to watch standard definition TV and DVDs on your TV, then one of these 852x480 screens might well suit you and your pocket best...
Just one other point is that, if you are going to be watching mostly standard definition broadcast TV then some of the top end LCDs (and to some extent plasmas) will actually be WORSE suited for you than the low end models - reason being, if the screen resolution is very high and the screen very large, when you watch the (relatively) low resolution picture from standard broadcasts, the resulting picture is much worse than that seen on your average CRT television and even a low end plasma...0 -
i bought a philips 42" plasma for £1200 with wall bracket and deliverychrisw79 wrote:The TVs not that great, you can pick up a big name plasma (like panasonic / toshiba / hitachi) for a similar amount these days. The picture quality on this is not that great when viewed next to something like a Panasonic PW7 (available at richersounds for £999). Don't let the price tage fool you.Never do things tomorow when you can do them today.0 -
There was a fantastic article in the Mail on Sunday about HDTV in the USA and how the viewing public are saying how ugly it makes the stars look with its sharp picture.
It says that it makes spots and bad skin stick out and tommy lee jones comes in for a lot of stick because it seems he has a scar from his letf eye to his jaw bone and its visible on HDTV.
Also that when watching american football on a cheap plasma tv when the ball is thrown it leaves a long trail behind it until the picture refreshes.
has anyone else seen or heard this as we are about to get a new tv0
