Retrieving emails from backup?

Last year my old PC died and I backed up my emails onto my external hard drive. I tried to transfer them to my new pc but I think I did something wrong and a batch were missed. Now I really need to access these mails, I can see the folder on my external drive, but I can't open and read them. Any ideas?

Thanks for answering, I found that they open in wordpad (but in a long stream of dozens of emails with odd characters everywhere). I have managed to find the emails I needed now.
