You cannot be 100% safe with internet banking. Unlike traditional banking the liability for fraud is more likely to fall on you if things do go wrong and the bank can prove any loss was down to your negligence e.g. revealing passwords, virus infection, spyware. I have implemented internet security systems for banks and I have worked on ebanking systems. I do not do internet banking.
If you do want to go ahead then please make sure you use a completely unique password for every system. Do not use any password which is used for email or (worst of all) web forums.
This site, for example, runs a piece of software called vBulletin. There are a number of published modifications that can be made to vBulletin to allow a site's administrator to see your password. Use a password on a web forum and you cannot guarantee that the forum administrators won't have access to your password - and therefore be able to access your other email, e-shopping and banking accounts. Use a unique password and the problem goes away. Do understand I'm not accusing Moneysavingexpert's forum admins of fraud, far from it - but you can never be sure. Move away from a nationally known forum like this to the North of England Toad Sexing Forum, or the Hampshire & Surrey Lada Drivers Forum and you are dealing with people who may be completely untrustworthy.0 -
I am shocked and appalled at your unprovoked attack on the North of England Toad Sexing Forum, in this house we worship the toad, especially on nude day.

When I type my password into websites, I always miss a couple of letters/numbers out, and click on the space where they are missing and input them afterwards.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End
You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time0 -

It is a method I've seen before, in case there's a keylogger (e.g. you're very paranoid or you're using an unfamiliar computer). Similarly people use on screen keyboards. All to avoid accurate recording by keyloggers even if the site is legitimate."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

From today's Register:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/04/04/banking_code_2008/The banking industry has re-affirmed a policy that makes online banking
customers responsible for losses if they have out of date anti-virus or
anti-phishing protection. New Banking Codes for consumers and businesses
took effect on Monday.
The Banking Code produced by the British Bankers' Association (BBA), and
followed by most banks, makes it clear that banks will not be responsible
for losses on online bank accounts if consumers do not have up to date
anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall software installed on their
machines.
The new version of the Banking Code is available at:

But if they just have to re-enter the correct password on the next page then the keylogger will record that too.
Using onscreen keyboards are a good idea (for the very paranoid;))0 -
I am chairman of the Surrey and Hampshire Lada Drivers Association and resent your insinuations that we might not be trustworthy. Our reputation seems to be suffering. Only last week, we had a member who was accused of exceeding the 30mph speed limit. We all know that this is not possible in a Lada!0
