:o:o:oHi,we are a family of 4 living in a council flat we pay full rent and dont get benefits.....my flat is 2 bed and my daughter is now 11 and my son is 5 and really we need an extra bedroom but the council list is so long that it will take years for us to get a 3 bed property so ive started to look at private rent places but its just so expensive....i was hoping someone would be able to tell me if i find someone that takes housing benefit would the council let me move and help us with the part of the rent that we couldnt afford???? I just feel very stuck with not mant options....thanks.

As Julie03 says, don't be too swift to give up a secure tenancy in exchange for a move into the Private Rented Sector. Check out your options for a swap for a larger Council property. If you don't qualify for Local Housing Allowance in your current property then you won't in a PRS property unless your income changes.

Is there anyway you can temporarily divide the second bedroom by using a screen or shelving?

this is now coming to an end... i think it stops in October
That's a quote from Pastures New's two and a half year old post at the start of the thread . Sarah9905 has more recently posted on the end of the old thread.:)

The removal of the excess LHA payment is planned for April 2011

I am getting HB around £40.- per week. If I put my details in entitled to I should be getting over 100 if I was on LHA. The difference is HUUUUGE and would mean such a lot to me. I tried to ask council why the difference and didn't really get satisfactory answer.

Any suggestions how to proceed from here? I was going to go through all the HB papers and calculations just to check them (they also claim that I have been overpaid over £300 ) and then go back to the council with all the calculations and ask again about the LHA against my SOA which is looking very sad.
