Thanks everyone for all of your replies - this really is a great place! :D

Unfortunately i couldn't start my challenge this week but everyone's suggestions have really helped and i hope they've helped out other people in a similar situation. Looks like i'll be able to save a load of money, which of course will be spent on that much needed item; Beer!

If anyone has any more suggestions, particularly for savings on non-food items please please post! :D

For tolietries, get yourself over to the boots grabbit bargain thread on Grabbit.

There are other things you can put in the washing machine too - I use soda crystals - which work out far cheaper than laundry detergent - there is another thread on Old Style about this. If you don't want to go that route then simply use a third of the recommended amount of power and it tends to work fine.

For beer - look at using an online delivery place and hunt out codes for them and go via pigsback or another affilate site if you can. Get a tesco clubcard and pick up the offers/extra points from that. :D

in ASDA they currently have 3 tins of toms for £1 with Garlic or Chilli in. these are great for making spag bol or a chilli as you just have to add mince and an onion for a basic meal. plus you can freeze and eat another time

£8.50 a week on groceries but is that for all your meals? Doesn't count if you're having take-aways :p Really doesn't sound like much if you buying some fresh fruit+veg, milk, bread and meat etc...

I should take another read of this thread - spent £20 this week on takeaway and another £25 on booze! Not done that since freshers... :o
With that £10 you can all of it I reckon.

Breakfast everyday is Bran Flakes (36p for a a good sized box at Tesco that lasts about 2 weeks!) along with milk and banana.

For lunch I have sandwich with filling like cooked ham and coleslaw, apple, choc and yoghurt. All dirt cheap. You can get 5 yoghurts for 38p etc.

For tea you can have things like beans on toast, pasta, cheap pizza etc. Add on a few things like cheap veagtables and you're laughing.

If you want to eat the same thing everyday £10 is easy.
If, like me, you want to cook nice meals everyday, that aren't processed so much they no longer have taste, you are looking at spending more.
I do a £50 or so shop every 2 weeks just for myself, this usually includes alot of alcohol which inflates the price though.
Combine this with buying milk, bread and rediculous amounts of humous from the uni shop!

Too many people worry about not having enough money, but it ain't that tough to survive!

I've been at uni three years now and one of the best things id recommend to any student is to time when they go shopping. Go during time when they put clearance offers which is usually around 8/9. Theres an asda near where i live that reduces bread to 10p you can get baguettes and loafs, buns etc. that u can then freeze. Also buy veg/fruit from markets instead of asda/tesco or even lidl usually u can get more for cheaper. Also when going out for food look for student deals or use studentbeans.com u can print vouchers and discounts for alot of resturants etc.

Yes I find Sundays are the best days to go shopping as so much of the fresh items such as meat, veg and bread is reduced.
