Allotment "Squatting"

We have an area of allotment land near us where each plot is privately owned. Many of these plots have been owned for at least fifty years, though more likely one hundred and passed down through families (so not registered).

But it must be at least twenty years since anyone actually grew something on them (apart from bonfires) which is such a waste of good land.

Anyway with all the talk of waiting lists for allotments has anyone ever heard of any incidences of allotment "squatting" where an allotments have been abandoned, or any organised effort to bring these place back into use as allotments.

(Not interested getting one myself by the way).
