Want to cancel my contents insurance but have a problem...

Hi
When my contents insurance renewal came though at the end of Feb I found it had gone up by more than £1 per month and also looked online to find much better deals - I really want to take out accidental cover in addition to my basic contents insurance and most of the good insurance deals out there include accidental cover for the same cost or less than what I am paying at the moment which does not include any accidental cover. However (totally my fault) I thought I would deal with it but forgot about it, then went on holiday and before I know it am just over a month into it (34 days) as it auto-renewed. I now want to cancel it but have read in the policy booklet that I can only cancel within the first 30 days. I pay by direct debit each month but it is an "annual contract of insurance". The Halifax state I will suffer a total loss (which I take as meaning the full annual premium) if I cancel after 30 days.
Do I have some rights here? Can they really take a whole 11 month's of premium even though I have only used them for just 34 days? I naturally assumed I would only pay one month more at most plus small admin fee if I wished to cancel any time throughout the policy as I have done with car insurance in the past which I have cancelled mid-way when I have paid monthly.
One thing I have noticed is that on their insurance paperwork my surname has been miss-spelt on all documents relating to this new year's insurance. Although the address and everything else is correct. Does this help me in any way? I doubt it will but I wasn't sure.
Thank you very much for any help and information.
