Laptop problem

Hi I have a dell inspiron 9300 and I haven't had it working for a while but I think im going to try and sort it out, basically the problem is this. It doesn't take a charge due to the fact that i believe the socket the charger plugs into has a loose connection or is broken, it is this as I originally thought it was the actual charger itself but i replaced that and it helped for a while but then went back to its original state.
My question is this, is this something a computer shop will be able to sort out relatively easy and roughly how much would I be looking at?
thanks in advance.
niki

cheers for that, but firstly Im not going to attempt it myself, just wondered if this is something that laptop/computer repair shops undertake and how much usually.

If its the DC jack you are talking about, I had quotes around £140 in London.
The problem is the laptop has to be stripped right down and the motherboard taken out for the new jack to be soldered on. I did mine myself in the end, the jack cost £3.55 !!
Mine is an old laptop and not worth spending on and it was good practice as i've never soldered before  pretty scary and the iron hurts when you put it on your skin :o

    These do it for £70

    you may laugh but.....

We have a dell Inspiron that wont charge, we attached a rubber band to the power cable and then attached it taughtly to the corner of the laptop, now charges perfectly as long as you make sure the rubber band is in the right place, sounbds dumb but savid us 400 quid on a new laptop ;)

I took it to pieces first and to fix it would have required a new motherboard which is more epxnesive than the laptop :)

I used to do similar but just bending the cable underneath the laptop, however I might just try that with the bands! apparantly the dc jack going is quite a common problem with inspirons.

yeah, after a while the cable bending stopped working for us as well, high tension rubber band will do it :)

    No probs niki

yes i did put it on me skin a few times haha i had reading glasses on and a magnifying glass cos the bits you gotta solder are so tiny, but hey i done it, and had loads of screws left over from dismantling the lappy, so im expecting the hard drive to fall out one day

    Good luck to you
