Question on home insurance cancellation.

Hi folks,
I've recently been giving my father a financial health checkup and discovered he's paying Halifax £740 a year for buildings & contents insurance. Churchill can provide pretty much identical cover for £220 (+ quidco discount hopefully).
He's been with Halifax for donkey's years now and in reading their policy details they state:
"Your policy is an annual contract of insurance, unless you have an extended contract."
By extended contract do they mean that a renewal is treated as a rolling monthly contract, or something completely different? His renewal isn't until September so I'd like to get him off them as soon as possible.
Thanks for any tips.

I'm also with Halifax and pay monthly and it is similarly called an "annual contract of insurance" and wish to cancel after only 34 days of use - but they say I will have to pay the full year if I cancel after 30 days! I'd be interested to know what you find out. Surely we can cancel mid-way as I have done many times with previous car insurance that I have paid monthly. In those instances I only paid for the following month (fair enough) and that was it. I too have found much better deals hence the need to change.0
