Paying my parents rent

Basically, i was just wondering what everyone thought about this situation.
My mum and dad, brother and sister moved to australia in sept, and as I had just completed my first year at uni I didnt want to move with them, but rather stay and complete my degree. So my mum and dad took on a mortgage for a flat for me to live in; (they currently own a house outright in scotland, and are paying rent on a house in oz). I know the mortgage repayments are just over £400 a month, and my flatmate currently pays £200. Plus we share the gas and elec bills. (my mum pays for broadband and tv license) and i buy my own food etc.
At the moment, i make £100 a week, which is fine for what i need, but i would like to contribute to paying the mortgage. Would anyone else do this in my situation? or should i just let them help me out whilst im at uni.
Thanks peoples!

I can see your point, if I were in your situation I would feel a bit bad for doing so, however I think if you are nice generally don't ask for extra money it should be ok. Buy clothes, all good etc.etc.
And don't forget, parents are more than likely counting on you to get a good job when you are older and to look after them when you retire

Thanks, I do feel bad sometimes, but then i look at my friends who live at home and dont pay a single sausage then moan at me for being skint when they get massive loans/bursaries/wages, and i dont even get a loan! but even still, i think im gonna try and put anything i have left over at the end of the month into an isa, then when when im finished my degree use to help pay the mortgage. It wont be the same every month, but I think it'll be nice lump sum, and my mum and dad will be very impressed!

I live at home and pay rent, but my parents are here so I still get all my washing, cooking etc done for me. So it's a bit different.
Save the money you'd pay in rent if they won't take it and buy them something nice

I was going to suggest you put so much away every month. That way, you will have it if some emergency crops up.
Maybe you will need it for the flat at some point: decoration, repairs, improvements etc?
If you still have it at the end of your course, then you can give it to them and I'm sure they'll be thrilled you've saved that with them in mind.0 -
If I were in your parents' position I wouldn't want my child to pay towards the mortgage. However if you can put a little bit by to pay your own fare to Oz to go and visit them I'm sure you'd all get much more out of that! They'll be proud that you're managing without any extra help (financial or practical) and a bit of extra time together will be far more valuable than a few hundred pounds off the mortgage.0

I agree. You have shown youself to be a thoughtful and responsible person otherwise you wouldn't be asking the question. Save as much as you can for your future. It is what I hope my son or daughter would do.A trip to Oz would be a lovely surpise for them too if you can afford it.
Good luck.0 -
I am in college and am living with my parents. I think that getting EMA is a help to them because I won't be using their money all the time for books etc. It's great you're thinking about paying to help the mortgage, but if your parents seem to be coping then it won't really matter. If they have mentioned problems then I suppose you could pay something.0
