Please help I want out of joint account!

Hi I was hoping someone can help, a few years ago I set up a joint account with a friend and I no longer have anything to do with this or the friend. I have stuck my head in the sand and never got out, but now she is abusing it. I got a snotty phone call from the bank saying I had to sort it out, and get out before she affects my credit rating, so I sent a letter saying I wanted my details taking off the account and even typed a letter for her and asked her to sign and send to the bank. I then got a letter from the bank saying pretty much what the phone call said, so I rang being 81/2 months pregnant ended up in tears as I had no idea what to do. I spoke to the Customer Services Manager who said we could do something, she then sent me a special form which I signed, and forwarded to my 'friend'. That was about a month ago and I today received a paying in book for that account, so I have sent a letter to the bank asking if she has signed any of the paper and returned the paying in book showing them I don't want part of it.

If I don't hear in the next few weeks I will make an appointment to see the bank, but I want to know Can I get out of this? It is really starting to get me down, she is a very lazy person and I bet she has not even opened her mail. I don't want to speak to her as her husband is not a very nice person and I am scared of what he might do.

Please, please can anyone help me?

Two questions - how much is owing on it (if anything)

Has a freeze been put on it?

Its is currently in credit, but she goes overdrawn without an overdraft.

Freeze I haven't been told that is an option. Is this something I can do?

    Sorry for my naivety.

Yes very important - contact the bank tomorrow and put the account into dispute whilst in credit.
This will mean that you nor your friend will be able to pay anything in or out until the dispute has been settled.
This will be done when your friend returns the form authorising them to take your name off the account.

As soon as a bank is informed that there is a dispute between parties they should 'inhibit' the account. If you have informed them in the past that there was a dispute and they didnt inhibit the account you are not liable for its activity from then on. Its the banks because they didnt take preventative measures to prevent misuse of the account.

  • What a nasty piece of work your friend is, she should of closed the account or at least had her name removed when you parted friendship-hope you get it sorted xx

  • Thanking you so much for all your advice and comments. As it turned out when I cntacted the bank again the Customer services Manager said she would deal with this personally as I was so upset. Anyway she actually said she would freeze the account, but speak to my 'friend', she did and told her what she was actually doing and my 'friend' dropped the signed documents off that day. I am now free and I have learnt a very valuble lesson from this and will be much more cautious in the future. I can now enjoy my baby, without this holding over my head. I have written a letter of thanks to the Customer Services Manager as she was s helpful in a bank that made me wait 20 mins in a queue when I was 9 months pg without an apology when I complained.

Thank you again for all your help.
