fitting handles to kitchen cabinet doors

Options
just wondered if anybody has any tips. i've got gloss white slab doors with 'modern d handles' they are like bar handles but without the extra bit on each end. i know i should drill from the back, but not sure about measurements.

i am fine with the drawer fronts as i basically want them dead centre, so have measure the centre point and gone out 6.4mm each side for the handle holes.

for the cabinet doors, is there a recommended procedure for the measurements? for example with a 500mm x 700mm door, to make it easy i could make the first hole 50mm across and 70mm up, then go along 12.8mm for the other hole? and with a 600mm x 700mm door say 60mm and 70mm for the first hole?

if anyones got any tips please let me know

I made a template so that they were all an even space up and across from the corner they needed to be in. Held with clamp and drilled away...........

good tip but normally the doors are marked on the inside for the handles
My opinions are purely my own act on them at your own risk

Don't drill from the back.....the exit point of the drill bit will cause a splinter not the entry.

If they are marked on the inside the get a piece of wire and bend it into a U shape so its equal, then if you slide the U around the door so that tip of the U is on the inside mark(trim it to fit perfectly) then the outside tip of the U will duplicate it exactly....mark and drill.

Howdens do termplates now for handles which are very helpful. basically a grided peice of plastic usable on any kitchen. Many doors and drawer fronts now either no longer have indents showing where to drill or they are wrong. This is due to the large variety of handles now usable on most units - rather then saying you must use this one type.

You can drill from the back, the recommended way is to use a very small 1mm drillbit and go right through, gently. Any damage will be minimal and covered by the handle. You then go back through from the front using a larger (usually about 3 or 4mm) drillbit. If you are still worried, stick a little masking tape over where the drill will emerge on the front.

Drill from the back with a smaller pilot drill then from the front with the correct sized drill.
If you try and transfer the marking from the rear to the front, you WILL get it wrong - just once is enough to ruin the door !
