    Hi,
I have a condenser dryer which takes a 7lb load and I thought I would see how much it cost me over the weekend to run as I normally use it at night on economy 7.

I put a full load in for an hour, had the washing machine on at the same time for an hour, 2 televisions were on and one kid on the pc plus other normal stuff, fridge, freezer, kettle etc.

My electricity usage was a total of 4 kws for that hour so it cost me altogether 64p. Not bad considering I had a lovely warm kitchen and dining room as well bcos the dryer kicks out an awful lot of heat so c/h wasnt on.

Tumble dryers get a thumbs up from me.

This is probably not a feasible option for some, but if you have a Hills Hoist dryer and one of those heavy cast iron metal sun umbrella stands, you may find that your Hills Hoist pole fits neatly into your sun umbrella stand. Our does, and the Hills Hoist can be erected in the garage. (Probably not a good idea if the only access to your garage is via the front door which is exposed to the road and opportunist burglars, but ours has a side door which can be left open for ventilation). However, I only use this option as a real emergency when I have loads of big laundry to deal with. I'd rather go the indoors route and do it on two successive days.
  • Out on the rotary line on a blowy or sunny day, even if they don't get completely dry I think they tend to dry better once you bring them in?
I have a tall airer which is kept in the spare room and stands next to the radiator - holds three full loads and tends to dry in 24 hours but I do tend to move stuff to our bedroom radiator to finish it off.
Over the weekend and yesterday I did seven loads of washing - change the sofa covers so got that out of the way, towels, bedding, summer jackets to put away clean and general clothing - had most of it dried on the line and then have a load still left on the airer which will go away today.

It is a bit of a chore but I wouldn't have a tumble dryer - my Mum's went bang after 30 years and she didn't replace, they noticed a saving of £40 on the leccy bill in the first month - she used to dry everything though and never use the line even in summer.

I like to get my stuff hung out even if it is frosty as I love the smell of clothes dried outside:)
  • I bought one of the JML Dri buddies at Argos yesterday and am about to use it! It was effectively free as I found an old argos giftcard from my Birthday which I had totally forgotten about:j Will have to see how it dries the stuff now!

  • I line dry as much washing as I can and have an airer in a handy space in the hall upstairs. I recently bought a condensor dryer which means I have converted a junk cupboard under the stairs into a drying room. Also have the coats hung on the door so out of the way and dry quick if its a wet day. I have gas/elec pre pay meters so was able to work out how much it would cost to run. For a load of towels it cost 50p. It also heats up the dining room. I dont use it all the time but when I have towels and bedding and its raining/freezing its a god send. Im going to get a dehumidifyer too as my front room has penetrating damp.
I have every possession I want. I have a lot of friends who have a lot more possessions. But in some cases I feel the possessions possess them, rather than the other way round

I line dry as much as I can, but its now come to the stage its not drying at all so i tumble dry the bits that go in there and the stuff that doesnt eg delicates, some jumpers etc get hung up on hangers in the airing cupboard. This house I am lucky enough to have a nice place to hang there wasnt an airing cupboard in the old house which caused damp and condensation from clothes drying that couldnt be TD. I must admit I have a miele tumble dryer which is sensor dry and economical and I do use it a lot in the winter. We recently went on holiday and the cottage had a washer dryer which i could have dried it quciker by running round the house waving the washing lol:rotfl:

In short if you are lucky enough to have a dryer and are able to stretch to using it (economically of course full load) then go for it yo`ll spend a lot more fixing your house from the damage of damp walls if you dont.

We live in the UK, and it is currently raining cats and dogs, as it was yesterday. How can you lot survive without a tumble dryer? I still have nightmares from when I was younger, and I would come home to find my damp sports clothes in the house, "ready" for me to wear that evening because they had been out on the line all day - never again!
  • On sunny days I've been putting the clothes on an airer and leaving them in the conservatory while we're out at work. On cold but sunny days, it gets pretty warm in the conservatory and most things are usually dry by the time we get home.
From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!

I dried one full load in the tumble dryer in 30 mins this afternoon. Being a good MSEr (and just out of interest!) I recorded my electricity before and after using the dryer - I used 1 unit (about 30p).
