Nope, I don't think the landlord has any requirement to make sure the locks meet a suitable standard. Could you sue the landlord for negligence? You'd have to take legal advice on that one (and a court case wouldn't be cheap).

I rent a flat and part of my rental agreement is that I have insurance cover for the contents of the flat (which includes the contents belonging to the landlord ... since I'm financially liable for them).

My insurance is about £7 a month ... lots less that the price of a laptop. Still, I learned the hard way by having a laptop stolen while I was uninsured. While I've been insured, I've had no losses ... I'm sure there's a moral to that story.

    Hi Marble

Be safe - you might like to check your policy to ensure your dwelling's locks comply with any condition as to cover.

It might be an idea for you friend to ask the landlord to give the names of the previous tenants to the police they might have used their old key to get in and you never know the police might recover their things if that was how it was done. Also ask the landlord to change their locks and try recommending getting some insurance.
