Thanks

How much can you afford to spend?

Do you care if it is large and heavy?

What other criteria do you have in your definition of "the best"?

The one recommended by the last person you asked !

You will get what you pay for - BUT - don't get seduced by the number of pixels the camera has. For the vast majority of purposes 6mp is plenty, use the money you saved by not buying a 10/12 mp model to buy a spare battery, and/or (if it is a DSLR) a longer lens.
Personally I would go for one made by a camera manufacturer, Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Pentax etc, etc, rather than an electronics manufacturer - the next post will disagree with that !!

Have a look at some review sites:

There is no 'best' camera. There may be one that is the best for what you want and your budget however. What do you need the camera to do?

    I bought a Panasonic TZ3 yesterday for £150-ish

7Mp, 10x Optical zoom and a very nice camera but the noise reduction in it can be a bit aggressive and they're not great at low light indoor shots. But for what I want it should be fine.

Although I agree about buying from a Camera Manufacturer I'm prepared to buy Panasonic cameras as they have excellent Leica designed lenses.

It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Whoever you ask will tell that their camera is better than that belonging to the person you asked previously !

    Exactly!

Buy some magazines, read through the features, best buy tables etc. Work out what you need within your budget. There are hundreds of factors. There is no such thing as a "best" digital camera, unless I'd argue you have about 6K to spend on the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III and another couple of thousand for 2-3 good pro lenses ;)

There was almost an identical thread yesterday, so it may be worth searching and reading too...

As you will by now have realised, there is no such thing as a " best " camera, let us know what your needs are, and perhaps we can suggest a few that fit your needs.;)

Personally, i think my next digi-cam purchase will be the Olympus Tough (The one advertised on the telly with the little kid and the dog). After 3 years with my sony, it has only just died - It sufferd large dents, drops, water-splashed and a 2 litre bottle of Innocent Smoothie over it. Unfortunatly, the dog taking a shining to it has finally killed it.

From what I've read and heard, this camera is perfect for me as a student who takes to slinging bags around with no care for the valuables within them. :P
