Staywarm 40318kw and help!!!!!

Hello, we are with saywarm in a 3 bed det.. are we really need some advise.

its our gas usage, and it is so high.

We have a fairly old, ideal standard boiler but even with this the usage is seems so high

just had the staywarm will and the annual was 40318 killowatt hour.

we have gas heating and an immersion heater, heating goes off at night, say at 12... and flick on at 8am, not roaring all day.

we might run the hot tap every so ofter for sink to wash, but that is it.

we don't use the bath, and have electric shower

the cooker is electric

the hob is electric

really it is just the rads, on a little in the morning, and night, sometimes during the day, but of course only when cold, and off for say months at a time in the summer.

so it looks like our Ideal standard is heating out hot water all of the time? to a tank in the loft? and the immersion heater?....... but we are not using it, we don't really use hot water much like i have said.... so its a waste, heating experts am I right in the above? about it heating the tank and the immersion?

what is the way round this, do we get timers or something, for the hot water?

our electric was 9527 is this ok?

Whats the solution as staywarm want £153.91 per month, we cannot afford this.

If you are using 40,318kWh, of which 9,527kWh is electric, you are a high user.

Your gas is approx 50% higher than average but your electricity is approx 3 times average. So while your gas use is high it is your electricity use that is the most concern.

You should not be using the immersion heater if you have gas CH, as it is cheaper to heat water with gas.

The Hot water tank(with the immersion heater fitted) is normally in an airing cupboard, not in the loft. The tank(s) in the loft are cold water.

It is not your hot water use that is the biggest cause for concern but all your other consumption - particularly electricity.

In any case Staywarm is not cheap. Putting your consumption figures of 31,000kWh gas and 9,500kWh electricity into a comparison site(for my area Midlands) gives a figure of £133 a month.

However you main aim should be to cut down on your huge electricity consumption; plenty of advice available for that on this board.

Hello thank you, not my figure's are for last year

    Gas 40318 kilowatt-hours

    Electricity 9527 kilowatt-hours

so are you say my electricity use is very high? and so is the gas?

but 9527 for elec is really high?

is the price per unit for electricity a lot higher compared to gas,?

I thought the gas was so high? and as you thought it was 30XXXX and now I have 40318 kw you must be thinking!!

I was thinking that because the gas was so high and the elec so low, use the tank to heat it.... but like you have said no.

what is the cost for 9527, if I had have done pay as you go and not staywarm.

I thank you, this is helping. as we will no what direction to look into.

The average UK household uses 20,500kWh pa for gas and 3,300kWh electricity.

So you use double the average gas and triple the average electricity.

Gas costs approx 3 pence for a kWh and Electricity costs approx 10 pence for a kWh. So it is always cheaper to use gas where possible - even with an old inefficient boiler.

So your roughly your Electricity will cost £1,000pa and your Gas about £1,200

Your case demonstrates why the Staywarm scheme gives little incentive to economise.

As you are over 60(to be on Staywarm) I expect you are in the house a lot.

You need to look at your insulation - cavity walls, loft etc and cut down on heating. It might pay you to think about getting a new condensing boiler if your old Ideal Standard boiler is really inefficient.

However you should be able to cut down drastically on electricity consumption.
