Try to begin with losing 10% of your body weight, so for example if you are 15 stone try losing 21 lb (1 1/2 stone). At 1 - 2 lb a week that should be acheiveable before you go away.

You should feel much better too. Over in the Money saving old style thread there is an old style weight loss if you want to look in there.

    Give it a go!

After listening to Gary Taubes lecture at Berkley and reading his book The Diet Delusion I have adopted a lower carb eating plan.
It clearly suits my metabolism as I'm now down to 12st 13lbs which means I've lost 24lbs over 10 weeks.

I have not felt hungry or had any cravings for alcohol, so as cutting out the refined carbs has eliminated to constant cravings for food it is an easy plan to follow and doesn't require special foods or expensive supplements/meal substitutes or meetings with support groups etc. In fact the money I have saved on red wine more than compensates for the bacon and eggs I now have for breakfast.

If you find the Gary Taubes lecture a bit hard going you may find this explanation How We become Over Fat a little easier to digest.

There are plenty of online BMI calculators that give an idea of what your ideal weight should be.

How do you all get motivated in the first place? I know the calorie count of most things, know what I should be doing, I swim twice a week and walk for 2 hours once a week - all very good but ................I stuff chocolate bars and biscuits in my mouth most nights hence I am 16 stone and climbing...... motivation needed desperately.
Make £2 a day challenge - doing well so far.

I found it very easy to just stop eating refined carbs. As soon as I cut out the carbs I was no longer hungry so didn't need to eat.

I am eating less, not snacking between meals and don't drink alcohol at all but because I don't have the continuous carbohydrate induced cravings for food/alcohol I don't have to eat and therefore am not tempted to do so.

If you have no urge to eat not eating isn't a problem. As long as you stuff chocolate bars and biscuits you will always find that you need to continue to do so. If you eliminate them then after a few days the cravings will disappear and losing weight is a doddle. I just wish I had done it years ago.

There is an active low carb forum here that has lots of useful low carb information.

Homealone - I don't think it really matters how much weight you lose as long as you lose some. We are all shooting in the dark really as we don't know how much you weigh (and you don't need to tell us) - but as you've put on 4 stone in a year - that's a start.

If you can afford to do one of the well known programmes, certainly weightwatchers do an online version (and poss slimming world) on this forum there is a ww and sw support thread, and over in the old style money saving there is a general weightloss thread there.

You need to make the decision to lose weight, there is support out there for you if and when you need it. The amount you lose is irrelevant - if you lose some you will start to feel better, and maybe inspired to lose more. Give it a go, but it will take a few months before you see a difference.

    Hope that helps

I agree with most of what lainz has said.

Most of my weight loss has been lost from my waist band and I've now a spare 6inches on the end of my belt. I'm losing about 2 and half pounds a week and not spending as much on food or £17.95 per month on weightwatchers. Where you lose weight first will depend on your genes but with mine it was the area last onthat was first off.

All I am doing is cutting out refined carbohydrates, potatoes, rice starchy veggies and alcohol. I'm not hungry and I eat as much as I want. I just don't have the craving for food any more so it doesn't matter if I miss a meal and I don't need to snack between meals so because I don't get hungry I don't find it difficult not to eat or to eat less.
My only extra expence has been to buy coconut oil (from an Asian corner shop £1 500g) because that helps your metabolism produce ketones and today (because I felt my rate of loss seems to be slowing a bit) some ketosticks (£6 x 50) for checking my pee to see if I am producing ketones (these show I'm still burning surplus fat as fuel).
