Just curious: how do students overcome the urge to surf the Internet? I find it hard not to spend a considerable time site surfing!!!!:o Any suggestions?

I've no idea, sorry!
My current bugbear is starting to research something in earnest - usually on Wikipedia to start with - and then, 5 minutes later, ending up having clicked on many blue words, only to find myself on something unrelated, like "Washing line", "Terry Wogan", "Trebuchet" or "History of combine harvesters during the first world war".
When I really need to put my head down, I'll work in the uni library PCs, as I always feel more 'worky' there. That, and I'll give myself 5 minute 'net breaks every hour to encourage myself.0 -
Teeb,
Thank you for your reply! I am a bit more generous than you when it comes to self-reward
I give myself more 'relaxing' time. I guess it is a good idea to study in a library but I find it a bit restrictive. Can't concentrate without constant coffee!!
I think it is a good idea to focus in your Internet search on relevant topics, dissertations etc. It is encouraging to read dissertations since it shows me light at the end of the tunnel. Sigh. Thanks again0 -
If I am not in lectures or tutorials I am on here, or google. My life is so sad

It is so difficult not to get distracted!
When I am working to a deadline, be it work or study, I open up the sessions that I need and find the relevant pages, and then ban myself from looking at anything else! I'll take a break when Doctors is on (I watch Neighbours at teatime now!), and I'll check my Facebook then.
Unfortunately I've just contradicted all of that as I should be working at the mo! xGone ... or have I?0 -
If you don't need the internet then you could always just unplug it. Or, I know there are some sites on which you can ask for a temporary ban so as not to distract you from whatever you're meant to be doing. Failing that, the best thing is to do the hour's work/fifteen minutes reward technique.0

I've fiddled with my router so it will kick me off and ban my computer's IP for certain days/times. But the problem is because I set it up, I can get round it :rolleyes:No longer using this account for new posts from 20130

Well, I used to use my laptop upstairs to work before we had wireless as we used to have a wire for the router, which would not reach that far.
Now I switch the router off at the plug. It's not a huge deterrent but it does require me to get up and go into a different room. Then it takes a while for it to connect to the internet afterwards. Often it's enough to put me off!
I struggle with emails too. I just can't make myself leave them until later so I find it's better not to have outlook open in the background.
Difficult one though. I think allowing yourself so much time (and being strict about it!) is the only way tbh.0
