two options
1) a router and ethernet connections to each Pc, most modern PC's have a built thernet port, Xp more or less sets networking up for you
2) wireless router , may involve getting wireless PCI cards or USB adapters , so more expensive than above but easier to set up over a whole houseEx forum ambassador

i will go for option 1 , can i use a wired adsl modem router so they can all connect to the net as well as share files. once i have them all connect to the router via Ethernet , how do i set up the network so they can share files0

Easy peasy wireless router adsl modem i what i have . Connects by wired ethernet to main machine thats next to it . Laptop has built in wireless test machine in the garage just uses a plug in wireless usb stick . Had a total of ten machines connected in the house at the same time for a party .
Network sharing and folders can be a bit fiddly to get to grips with but their is a sticky on here .
The only drawback is that the machine you want to grab your shared stuff off has to be switched on .

yes, they can all access the internet, and XP has a Shared Documents area that is visible on the network to ALL PC's. You can also "right click" on Folders/files on each PC and share themEx forum ambassador
