Completing in 4-6 weeks- question about utilities

This question will fall under the boring but informative category. My question is... we are conceivably completing on our house in the next 4-6 weeks. What happens with the utilities? Do I need to find out who the vendors are using as a supplier and sort out the accounts now? Or will they just send a bill after we move in?
Is it just a matter of moving in and telling them the date? I'd actually like to use Quidco to set everything up, but I'm not sure what I need to do.
My thinking is that we'll move in, then they'll send us our first bill, then we'll use quidco to switch accordingly. Not sure if I have it right though.
I'll need to sort gas, electric & water. And council tax of course.
Such a boring question... maybe I'll go monger some doom on a HPC thread now.

That and the actual meter readings. Is it just a matter of moving in and telling them the date?A house isn't a home without a cat.
Those are my principles. If you don't like them, I have others.
I have writer's block - I can't begin to tell you about it.
You told me again you preferred handsome men but for me you would make an exception.

OK, so on the move-in date we need to check the meters. So simple, yet I wouldn't have thought of it. Thanks!0 -
The only problem I had was with the phone and internet. The previous occupiers were with Talk Talk and it took 6 weeks to get a BT connection with our number! Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? My new house is with Virgin for the phone, any ideas how this works when I move in?0

You can either arrange with Virgin to keep that line or arrange a new connection with BT.
If with BT you would need to find out if the BT wiring is still in the house or you need a new connection at £125.0 -
In signing all the contract about the house the sellers will have to say who are the current providers - they will do meter readings on the day they leave and then you will do a meter reading immediately after picking up the keys.
This means the companies will send the last bill to them and send a new one to you starting with the meter reading you gave. You must go immediately to check the readings to make sure the sellers have given a very similar reading.
In regards to the phone this will be stated on the exchange documents that the seller fills in - he hsa to say hwo the provided is and waht the number is and if they are keeping that number.
I have just sold my house so filled in all this info.
when i moved into my rented accommodation my BT line was set up within 24 hours as there was already a phone line. You will not have to stay with the provider the seller had - you can sign immediately for a new provider.
