Car insurance -Cancellation nightmare/direct debit

A long story... here goes
I went online and got a car insurance quote from Alliance & Leicester. The first thing it asks you is your renewal quote. I entered this honestly as £230, my qoute from them came it £220, as they gurantee to beat your renewal quote.
I accepted this quote and paid a 10% deposit using a credit card.
Next came my insurance certificate & all documents along with a letter saying they need to see proof of renewal and no claims bonus (even though this wasnt mentioned on the website). Anyway, this went in the post straight away.
I went on holiday for two weeks and came back to FOUR letters requesting this information again. I explained i had sent it and they said they hadn't. Next i contact my old insurer to ask them to send the information to my new insurer. They said they had done this for me.
Two weeks later, i get another letter from Alliance and Leicester, saying that due to me not sending in the documents my insurance for the year will rise by an additional £1,087! It said that if they did not hear from me within 7 days they would assume i no longer want the insurance and the cancellation process would begin.
Anyway, i had a hectic week that week and didnt contact them, but presumed it would be cancelled.
The next week i got a letter from Alliance & Leicester again saying my insurance has been automatically renewed at the new premuim and my monthy payments have been adjusted to £172 per month instead of £20 per month!
I telephoned them & explained that i no longer want this insurance and the man said he cannot cancel it until he recieves the insurance certificate back.
Next day, recorded special delivery goes the insurance certificate... a follow up call by me to check they have it and yes they do, they will now cancel.
Yesterday i recieve a letter from Premium Credit Limited saying they have recieved authorisation from Equity-Alliance & Leicester to increase my monthy payments to £172pm with effect from 16th April.
I have been in contact with Premuim Credit Limited to explain that i had cancelled, and even wrote them a letter explaining all.
I wrote that i no longer give them authorisation to continue taking direct debits.
I got one back and part of it reads:
Premium Credit is unable to cancel your agreement without prior authorisation from Equity-Alliance & Leicester.
Please contact Equity-Alliance & Leicester on 01277 200100 with regards to the cancellation of your insurance.
I have now written to bank and cancelled the arrangement but i do not want this company to continue trying to get money from me and perhaps leaving a mark on my credir rating
I will now also owe Alliance and Leicester some monies, but i would expect the premuim to be calculated pro rata on the original quote not on the one they sent me weeks after!
Any ideas what i can do now?

do they just not want to give me that low quote... it is obviously just a computer program that automatically takes £10 off your renewal...0
