I was listening to a podcast today that mentioned a guy who bought www.donotreply.com years ago, then discovered that loads of banks, insurance co's and the Dept of Homeland Security (!) send emails out from "something@donotreply.com" expecting the recipient to get the message that he should not reply to that email.
A proportion of hurried people DO and these emails were overloading his server, including as they did personal details, bank details, company details, etc. which were in the ORIGINAL email sent by the above institutions (when you reply it usually included a copy of the received email).
You get the idea.
Now I wonder who has registered www.donotreply.co.uk... oh I see the Russian Hackers Federation.

Apart from the sheer bad manners and irresponsibility associated with using a domain they have no right to, these banks etc make themselves appear incompetent when it comes to handling email. The privacy implications alone are serious so your classification of scary is very much justified. Now I wonder who has registered www.donotreply.co.uk... oh I see the Russian Hackers Federation.
