Travel insurance

We've booked a holiday in Turkey through the UK supplier - Freedom Direct to depart on the 25th of May. Could you please help to answer the following questions:

1. We've paid the full price by AMEX card. At the moment we don't have travel insurance, as our previous one has run out. We intend to purchase our travel insurance in early May after bank holidays. Will the timing of events matter? We paid for our holiday first and only after that we've purchased our travel insurance. Are we going to be covered for something we purchased before our travel insurance started?

2. Although we've bought everything in one place - it is not a packaged holiday as flights and hotel arte treated separately. If we are to cancel are holidays due to sickness, etc, before we travel, what will we be covered for? Somebody mentioned to me that if this not a packaged holiday, then only flights are covered and not the hotel. Is this true? Our hotel is not refundable within 10 days of travel.

3. Finally, can somebody recommend a decent (costs/value) travel insurance which is "child friendly" - we are travelling with two six year olds.

Many thanks,

  • Is there a reason to wait until early May - the insurance runs from the day you buy it, so if you have to cancel between now and when you buy the insurance, you wouldn't have any cover. It usually doesn't make any difference to cost - eg buying now to cover a trip in May would cost the same as buying now to cover a trip in October.

Check the wording of the insurance policy, but for point 2 I think you may be confusing the ABTA/ATOL/AITA guarantee (can't remember which - in case of a tour/flight operator going bust, it's whether you'd get your money back) with insurance, not the same thing. Insurance should cover you for all aspects of your trip and will include sickness - but check the wording.

Use the many comparison sites and make sure that, if you choose Europe, it includes Turkey - some do, some don't.

Insurance is cheap - we paid £47 for an annual multi-trip European policy for 2 adults - well worth it for peace of mind.

    Good luck

Not via your travel insurance which started on the date you purchased it.
You might be covered by AMEX.

Note that you should take travel insurance at the point of booking not the point of travel.
This is because something could happen in between to stop you travelling e.g. death or serious illness. Your risk starts when you book, so that's when you need insurance.
    But Check your amex paperwork.

Your insurance will take care of everything up to the specified limits (except excess and things that are excluded).
You need to check your policy for exact details but it would certainly cover hotels and flights.

Somebody mentioned to me that if this not a packaged holiday, then only flights are covered and not the hotel. Is this true?

What they probably meant is that the airline are not responsible for your hotel.
If you buy a package then the tour operator are responsible for the WHOLE package (it's one advanatage).
If you buy seperate arrangements then your airline are not responsible for your hotel and the hotel and not responsible for your airline as the arrangements are completely independent, however your travel insurance would cover it.
It's called consequential loss as your hotel would be lost as a consequnce of the airline (for example).

How does this work with an annual insurance? If we buy a holiday package in Feb to travel in June, then in March our insurance policy runs out and we buy a new one, perhaps even from the different provider? If we need to make a claim in June?
