does anyone make their own yoghurt?

Hi,

I'd like to start making my own yoghurt but don't want to fork out on a yoghurt maker. Jamie Oliver has a recipe in one of his books but it didn't really work. You had to boil i litre full milk, let cool to blood temp and add 500ml live yoghurt and leave for 8 hrs. It did change to yoghurt but was very runny and not particularly nice.

If anyone has any suggestions that would be great. ideall I'd like to flavour it and i adore lemon/lime yoghurt so any recipes would be very welcome

I'm alo inspired by the home made oven bread thread and am going to ask in Tescos for fresh yeast and try and make some this weekend
many thanks

You don't have to ;) I got one from Freecycle, loved it. I then saw a better one on Freecyle, got that, and Freecycled the original (to an OS poster, as it happens :j )

I got a maker a couple of weeks ago from freecycle...it's old and tatty but we gave it a try.

We use 1.5 pts of UHT milk (you can use straight from the carton at room temp) and a large spoon of the previous batch (or a bio yoghurt) to start. I turn it on just before we go to bed - normally at about 11pm and then I take them out and bung them in the fridge at 6 amish when we get up.

This makes a nice creamy texture yog and we flavour with various things...this weeks being a couple of tins of peaches in juice whizzed with a hand blender, save a couple of peaches to chop up over the top.....yummy!

    Hi, :)

I'm afraid the main link given earlier won't work any more. So here's a Magic Link that will...

500ml seems a lot! I use an Easi-yo yougurt maker (but not their sachets). I get a litre of UHT milk, add two tablespoons of powdered milk, and a couple of teaspoons of live yogurt, put it in the easi-yo tub, shake it up, add hot water to the flask, put the tub in the flask, and leave it over-night.....lovely smooth, creamy, thick yogurt! The whey is great in breadmaking too.....
