Getting car insurance for the first time

I'm about to buy my first car having recently passed my test. I've read the article on getting the cheapest car insurance, but I've got one question - when you sign up online for car insurance, at what point do you actually become insured? Do I need to post my driving license or any other ID/proof/forms to the insurer?
I know it's not really a moneysaving question but I'm sure someone here will be able to help me

You become insured from the date you request the policy to start.
No proof of ID is normally requested.0 -
You can set the exact time and date your insurance starts, they then send you all the stuff in the post.
I started to be insured at 10am and I was sat in the car and as soon as it clocked over to 10:02 (just to be sure!) I set off!"I'm not from around here, I have my own customs"
For confirmation: No, I'm not a 40 year old woman, I'm a 26 year old bloke!0
