Excuse me for asking a stupid question but we just oved in to a new house which used to have sky- dish is still on the roof.

Anyway if I took the sky box from my brother , and paid £20 for the card , can i join up or is it not as straightforward as this?

Also i presume this is a kosher offer and not something which sky frown upon as being illegal?
Yes it can be that straightforward. If the dish is there and the wiring is intact connect your brother's box, you should then be able to view all the free channels. If it's working ok then you can ring Sky and ask them for a FreeSat card so that you can view ITV1, ITV2, Channel 4 and 5. There is a link here to info on Sky's FreeSat along with the phone number to ring. It's legit!

How come ITV etc are encrypted on Sky boxes but not on freeview?

    Am I just being dense?

Merely because they want to avoid promoting their competitors as far as I am aware.
Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.

Together we can make a difference.

Freeview comes through your aerial, is subscription free and you will get your regional channels. ITV has to pay Sky big money for encrypting and regionalising its channels so Sky makes money from its subscribers by making them pay to watch the encrypted channels. The regionalisation service helps satellite viewers around the country to see the ITV programmes that are intended for them, which is important to the broadcaster as it sells some of its advertising regionally.

  • Have a sky plus box in one room.
Can I have the old sky box connected up in another room and use it as per this thread i.e will the dish allow enough connections off it?
Will I need a sky person to make the connection in the other room or can I just put a splitter on the connection in room 1?
You know what... you can't beat a good bargain!!!

If you already have Sky+ your dish should have a quad lnb, there will be 2 cables connected to it from your SKy+ box as it has twin tuners which enables you to record 2 different programmes at the same time. There should still be 2 free connectors on your lnb so you can run another cable from your old sky box to a spare connector on your dish. You should be able to do it yourself as long as you can reach your dish. You will need a suitable length of digital coax and 2 f connectors which screw on to the ends of the coax then screw one end into the lnb and the other screws into the dish input on the back of your box.
