Can I open an internet-based savings account for my 83 year-old mother-in-law?

Thanks all. Looks like we're going to settle on the Saga one year bond. My M-i-L fits the account opening criteria (ie she's over 65), the rate is good (6.41%) and the account can be opened and managed via the post. Many thanks for the recommendation - I probably wouldn't have spotted this one.

Flying Wolf. We've held various Saga Fixed Rate bonds in the past (and currently hold one). I find the Saga Savings Team very helpful to deal with over the phone too, which makes a pleasant change these days. On a previous occasion when a bond was coming close to its maturity date, we were unsure whether to renew with them or look for a better offer. So they arranged for our matured bond to be rolled over into a temporary Easy Save account for a couple of weeks while we pondered our options, and then when we'd decided to go for another Saga Bond, rolled it over again into a new one. All this was done over the phone with no hassle at all so hopefully this will be a comfortable option for your m-i-l.

    Hi Primrose,

I called Saga today and they're sending out application forms to my M-i-L. Everything was very straightforward as you say and they clearly had no problems with me calling on someone else's behalf.

As a matter of interest, Saga savings account sales and enquiries are handled by the Birmingham Midshires call centre based in Wolverhampton. I used the 'saynoto0870' website to avoid calling them on their normal 0845 number from a mobile phone (link attached for anyone who hasn't come across this facility before http://www.saynoto0870.com/ )

BallandChain - you're obviously a very suspicious person by nature. I'm afraid my username refers to nothing more than the fact I support Wolverhampton Wanderers football club and fly aeroplanes for a living. Over and out.
