Mobile Phone to Car Bluetooth

I am having difficulty being able to use my phone (Sony Eric K800i) with my cars' built in Hands Free Telephone System

The devices are paired and I can ask the car to call a number which it does, but as soon as the call is connected " transferred to phone" appears on the phone screen and all sound is in the phone. The same happens when a call is received - the radio will mute and the phone will ring - as soon as call is answered, it goes back to the phone.
This is driving me nuts

Anyone any ideas -

Oh I tried my wife's phone and it worked okay - so can't be the car
Also tried a blue tooth headset with my phone and it worked - so can't be the phone?? See my dilema
