Friday night car boot sale in Swansea

Options
From Friday April 11th, Bishop Gore School PTA will be holding a car boot sale in their canteen car park every Friday from 4pm-7pm (please don't arrive before 3.45, the teachers need time to move their cars!!) for 10 weeks; excluding 2 & 30 May (school closed for BH). Cars are £5 and vans are £8, there will be indoor provision if the weather is wet. Money raised from the pitches will be used by the PTA (a registered charity) to purchase a mini bus for the school. Refreshments will be available including home made cakes. Thanks for reading, hope I've not ruined forum etiquette by posting, we need all the advertising we can get (Evening Post charged us over £100 last year for 1 advert!!)
Bishop Gore Comprehensive School, De la Beche Road, Sketty, Swansea SA2 9AP.

The Evening Post are so greedy!

  • The evening post are a business after all Luxor they need to make a profit or the price increases for its readers its harsh but thats business for you.
  • We had lots of buyers turn up on Friday, I don't know if any of you money saving crowd were amongst them, thanks if you were. Unfortunately we were very short of sellers, maybe the weather in the morning put them off; we do have indoor provision if it is bad weather. Hopefully word will get around that we are there and the turn out will be even better this week. I'm usually on the refreshments stall, come and say hi, although I won't be there this Friday (Cardiff Flower show beckons!!).
Does anyone have any ideas for (free!!) advertising as shops are reluctant to put up posters and signs on lamp posts look untidy and very often disappear anyway? I apologise if it seemed I was criticising the Evening Post in my above post, my point was that paying for the advert took away nearly all of our profit.
    Thanks guys

Lots of local papers do a small whats on editorial type column which is free, have a look at all the local rags (particularly the freebies).

Contact local groups - scouts, St John Ambulance, Mums and Tots, community centres etc - maybe offer a tit-for-tat advertising of their fundraising events in your school newsletter. Send out a small flyer and ask parents to stick it in their car windows.

How about going to another local car boot sale and giving a small flyer to every seller.

I think that word of mouth is probably your best bet and it will get around eventually.

Good Luck, hope it works out for you.

It was me criticising the Evening Post :o. Surely it is poor business sense to set prohibitive charges? The Evening Post has lost repeat custom as a result.

Glad that lots of people turned out, you will grow more sellers as a result because people come as buyers to see what it is like, then return as sellers.

There used to be a regular Friday night boot sale at Killay (NCH) which was really popular, and they used huge road side signs (were some attached to parked cars?) which went up for a few hours on Thursday nights in time for the rush hour traffic. You are near Mumbles Road and Gower Road so you will have a huge passing audience.

Good luck with the sales, I'm looking forward to the next one.

I second the signs, it would attract attention.

Could you maybe approach a local business to sponser some signage in return for putting their logo on them?

and maybe put a banner one on the big pedestrian bridge over Gower Road by the church? It would be seen by thousands.

What about advertising in the local mini newsletter? Can't remember the name but they have one for every area in Swansea and it's A5 size greenish on colour (sorry not very helpful!)

  • Hi guys
We'd love to be able to put a sign up on the pedestrian bridge as you say it would be seen by loads of people, however there's an insurance issue, the PTA would be liable if the sign fell and caused an accident, so unfortunately it's more trouble than it's worth.
I shall be there today on the refreshments stall, even though the weather doesn't look much cop, we do a nice hot cup of tea with a free biscuit so come along and say hello. Help yourselves and the PTA make some money by having a good old clearout and if you don't sell all of it, you could leave it in the car ready to do Singleton tomorrow!!

Ok well how bout putting a banner sign on the wall of the church by the bridge? (if the church agree of course) Or putting a sign up on the car entrance to the school on de la beche road, like where they put the sign for the car park for the county show?
