Change of airline to holiday package

My parents have booked holiday to Majorca for the summer (don't know the tour operator), booked thru Thomas Cook travel agents. They were told they'd fly with Monarch and they upgraded (nicer meal etc).

They were told today ( a week after paying balance) that the airline will now be jet2, and no meal etc included. They've been told cos terms said airline could be changed, they are not due any compensation, and if cancel, will lose deposit.

I've told my Mum to call ABTA tomorrow, but in the meantime, does anyone have any thoughts? Mine are:

- Should replace like with like (although Monarch not top of the range, its better than jet2).
- Implied term in contract that wld do the above, therefore have breached the terms of contract, an under UCTA, contract is void, and they should be due a full refund.
-When did tour operator find out about change.

Any comments gratefully received! :D

The holiday companies are allowed to do this, its all in their terms and conditions, flying programmes are only provisional and are subject to change etc etc

Doubt they have breached their contract as its in the terms of the contract. And I wonder if the actual contract would specify Monarch Airlines? To be honest, the only difference between Jet2 and Monarch will be no inflight entertainment and no meal. If your parents paid for a meal they are due that money back (the agent should have offered that back).

It may be worth asking for any flight supplement paid, as a good will gesture but can't see there being much else in it.

Does it really matter which airline it is?
Granted you should get the upgrade money refunded, but apart from that I cannot see the issue.
Why would they be due compensation?

    Hi
Having recently travelled on both Monarch and Jet2 - I would much prefer the latter; more space (much more) and friendlier crew. Agreed thuogh you must get a refund for the upgrade
