It does seem a bit tricky. Apart from asking them which bit of law obliges them to do this (that will just confuse them),I would be requesting that they send someone from a local branch maybe to look at it. Maybe you would get more sense going into a local branch and speaking to a Manager-even if it was bought online. They are tying you up in red tape.
thanks i think i will take a trip down to the local branch it was purchased from aas its only a 15 min drive and speak to someone instore about it0 -
The Sale of Goods Act covers products for the reasonable lifespan of an item up to six years. I would say that two years is well within the reasonable lifespan of a leather sofa.
But.............
If a fault develops within the first six months, it is up to the retailer to prove that the item wasn't faulty when sold. After six months it is up to the customer to prove that the item was faulty when sold.
I would guess that this is why the shop wants you to get an independent report (it's up to you to prove the sofa was sold faulty/substandard). If the sofa is confirmed as having a fault, I would also expect the shop to refund any costs involved (for the report etc). How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

But as the OP (and I now) keep asking, who does the independent report?Toyota - 'Always a better way', avoid buying Toyota.0 -
