Hi all.
I'd like to create a decent looking website that does not cost the earth. I'm not a beginner, but then I'm no expert.
Where can I get some decent software at a fair price?
Thanks

I recommend learning xhtml and css.Please use OpenDocument (ISO 26300) format (.odt - .ods - .odp - .odg) for attachments0 -
notepad++ - does everything you need0

As hubris has mentioned a grounding in HTML & CSS would be a good start before using a WYSIWYG editor like Kompzer or aptana. Notepad++ and Textpad are absolutely fine if you can hand code.
Another idea might be to create a blog using wordpress. This would allow you to familiarise yourself with web authoring.

PageBreeze Free HTML Editor is an award-winning HTML Editor which has both visual (WYSIWYG) and HTML tag/source modes. http://www.pagebreeze.com/
Its free and comes highly recommend, nothing to lose I guess.0 -
Even if you use an editor it is always good to know HTML and CSS for the bits that just won't do as they are told.
I prefer the clean code when you do it yourself.0 -
Despite the criticisms of M$, I think Frontpage is a great quick'n'dirty editor, especially for making on-the-fly changes. Now discontinued, not replaced... Maybe get a cheap one off Ebay or it is in Office 2003 I think.0

It was replaced with essentially two products: Microsoft Expression Web and Sharepoint Designer. Sharepoint designer is only if you're running a Sharepoint server and you should get Expression Web for general web design. It's basically a competitor to Dreamweaver, and I having played around with it a bit, it's very good (completely new application written from scratch since Frontpage). If you have office you can buy it at the upgrade price. If like me you're registered as a student you can get the entire Microsoft Expression studio for free from Dreamspark.
Alternatively until July you can download and use Expression Web 2.0 Beta. http://www.microsoft.com/expression/"She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Interesting. And Expression Web is apparently $99 (instead of $299) to purchase if you are already licensed for Frontpage or Office - wonder if that price is to be had in the UK too..0
