PC World and laptop

I hope someone can advise me as I'm useless with computers. I bought an Advent 7111 from PC World in December 2006. It had a 12 month warranty with it, and as you may be able to guess, 15 months later the motherboard has blown and PC World want nothing to do with it. I have complained to their Customer Service quoting Sale of Goods Act etc and they've asked me to get an indelendent engineer's diagnosis on the motherboard. This will cost me £45.00, I'm in the process of doing this. The engineer has said that if the motherboard has blown then it's nothing that the user has done to it. In their letter it sounds as if PC World want to blame me for maltreating or misusing it. Can anybody help me as to how to pursuade PC World to repair or replace this laptop?
Thanks, Von

Unfortunately you will probably have to go down the small claims court route to get any joy.. I am in the process of doing this over a broken hinge and comet want nothing to do with it. They have told me that a laptop to last for 12 months only is acceptable and that a broken hinge is cosmetic damage and isnt even covered under thier 12 months warranty. I actually have a letter from comet stating that even if I had taken the laptop home and taken it out the box and the hinge broke on it first opening then I would have to pay for the repair as it is not seen as being anything other than cosmetic and doesnt interfere with the running of the laptop.
Fortunately for me Trading standards have sided with me and say that the hinge is a vital part of the laptop and not just there for cosmetic reasons. BTW my laptop is 19 months old and trading standards have been to the store and contacted the managers who have refused to budge. Just have to wait and see what the court decides..
and another thing.. Comet wanted to inspect the laptop to see if it was a manufacturing fault (which I am saying it is) but wanted me to pay them £94 to do it. If they agreed they would fix it for free although I would lose the £94 pounds so not really free and if they said it wasnt a manufacturing fault then they wouldnt repair it but keep my £94 anyway.0 -
There was an episode of "dont get done get dom" with the same issue (dont know if it was the same laptop)
PC world even went so far as to claim that the person had poured water over the laptop and thats why it had blown...
Might be worth getting in touch with that show, and avoiding PC World* in future...
(* don't get me started about PC World - I haven't used them for years)0
