Birmingham City Council - Cockup or Generosity?

Hi All
Well if any of you know what Birmingham City Council are like, you will realise why I am having to ask questions on here about stuff they should inform me!
Basically I am a non dependant living with my dad who is on income support/incapasity benefit/DLA (low rate).
When I moved back home after a period spent at uni and started working, my dad informed the council's benefit service that I was working and asked for amounts of how much I'd need to pay for my rent and CT.
After 3 months of hearing nothing, we phoned up the council yesterday and asked for the amounts and the benefits service said that as my dad had declaired that I was working, I wouldnt have to pay rent or council tax! They also said that the money that I had been saving for the arrears, I didnt need to pay them! Which as u can imagine was a shock! I made sure that my dad got the name of the person he was talking to.
Has anyone else had experience of this?! Technically if I use the money I've been saving and then the council say they want it, they wouldnt be able to claim it as they have informed me that it wasnt needed for rent or CT.
I'd be grateful for any advice!

If your dad is getting the care component of DLA then you're ignored for his housing and council tax benefit purposes. This is ONLY if it's the care component. Check with him. If so you can treat your dad with all you've saved !! I bet he's as proud as punch of you.I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!0
