Norway Fjords Cruise

So, we're thinking of doing this possibly around August / September. For those that have done so, can you recommend any suggestions? A few questions:
1. Did you find it easier to fly to Norway and board the ship there or cruise direct from England? I'm not too keen on going via the North Sea and would rather fly.
2. Do you think there is a huge difference between visiting a few places or most of the coast (some of these cruises cross the Arctic circle)? OH's suggestion is to spend a few days in Oslo prior or after the cruise, possibly leaving slightly less time for the cruise itself.
3. Any suggestions on cheap deals? We have the Hurtigruten brochure. Not sure if I'm keen on things like Thomson, but can't see ourselves being inundated with drunken brits on these things?
4. Did you get ample time to see the places where you stopped?
5. Any recommendations on particular excursions?
6. What would you say the minimum time is? We'll probably have 7-10 days, and want to see as much as we can, but don't want to be rushing around and not properly appreciate things.
Cheers for any suggestions

I've done a cruisebreak from Newcastle to Bergen that was a great trip, not REALLY a fjord trip, but definitely a great VFM trip :beer:0 -
We did the fjords two years ago with Cunard.
You can do it cheaper but we really couldn't fault a thing, even the weather ! I think the scenery looks even more impressive when you see it from a very large ship as you go through the fjords. The only possible drawback is that Norway is VERY expensive - but as you are on a ship you don't have pay for board/food ashore.
We did 7 days from/to Southampton on the QE2.
Queen Victoria is doing the fjords in May, from £1069 for 7 days. See:
http://www.cunard.co.uk/CruiseItinerary_tab.asp?cruiseid=2939&LeftNav=ourShips&Active=&Sub=&OB=&Region=11&ship=QV&ShipID=QV&CruiseDate=&Duration=
You can just see QE2 ! This is Geirangerfjord.0 -
We went with Royal Caribbean from Southampton (no problems with sea sickness) and, as we only had a short time in Stavanger, we went on a helicopter trip over the Fjords - breathtaking scenery. On the return journey, the helicopter circled over the cruise ship where we took some impressive aerial photos.0

I think MSC and NCL go to that area

I've done a Fred Olsen cruise up the fjords which departed from Newcastle. Nothing really wrong with the North Sea crossing.
The scenery is amazing but the cruising thing just wasn't my cup of tea, but then i'm fairly young and most of the other passengers were middle aged and upwards.0 -
Love that picture! Thanks.
Definitely don't want to do something that isn't explicitly Fjords-related.
Have just checked the Cunard site and had a heart attack at their prices! May is too early for us, I'm afraid, it's going to be August/Sept. as we're already going on hols in July. Becoming quite interested in the Hurtigruten seven day Northern Fjords voyage.
Anyone recommend others? P & O? Fred Olsen?'We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. '

Hi Barcode,
I saw this offer, free flight to Norway, when you cruise with Hurtigruten and thought of you.0
