New build criticism..

Have to say on here every time 'new build' is mentioned the automatic responce from some posters is that they are rubbish!

After watching loads of property ladder for example i have to say i wouldn't touch an old house with a barge pole! the amount of bodge jobs and quick fixes amazes me and i sit there in shock as they patch bits up! One i watched last week had half the support missing from the window, no support and it could have come crashing down at any minute, it got fixed as it had to but the rest which was pretty dire was bodged..but hey he made a nice profit!! At the end it looked lovely and if i hadn't known better id'e have loved it..if only you could see under the walls etc!!

friends are the same, quick bodges to make a quick buck..my friends house is awful and i don't know how it stands, when they bought it it looked like a show home but with some quick unveiling to put new lights in etc etc it all comes tumbling down!

Not to mention the expence..my other friend is having to shell out for a new boiler and window as the boiler has completley died and the window leaks so badly she will soon have to replace the carpet...it's just ongoing!

I know new builds aren't to everyones taste but still least i have some money and know i can have a hot shower in the morning!!

New builds are built to Building Regulations of which we have some of the strictest in the world. But plasterboard walls end up with holes in them from door handles hitting etc and the quality of fittings in them are often dubious. Most new builds I'd still want to rip out their kitchens and bathrooms :o

You pay a premium for a new build. If you took an old house with identical square footage to a new build, you'd find it cheaper. And I bet you'd have a bigger garden to boot. You could make the old house perfect with the change you'd get as well.

New build houses are just as ugly beneath the plasterboard!!

Well i agree but we have had a few bashes and nothing as yet, unlike our previous victorian rented one which DID have holes in the walls..give it time i will! As for the kitchen/bathroom..well i love the bathroom, very neutral the kitchen too is really nice BUT if i had money to waste i would rip it out and put a different one in, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it i am just picky and have seen a gorgeoues one! just to persuade df hey!

See not convinced on that one..older house where we are are still very pricey and as people think they can sell them in the state some of them are they would need improving!! Also when we bought this the garden was still mud with an excavator in! had no idea what it would look like but we have the best garden of the 6 houses, the corner one is smaller than ours which is one bonus you usually get.the others aren't flat which makes having simple things like table and chairs etc unusable...i think we may have just been very lucky!

True! hopefully i won't find out for a while!

To be honest, gabyjane, I wouldn't be too concerned what others think about new builds. Providing your home wasn't built on a flood plane, above an abandoned mine shaft or on an Indian burial ground then what does it matter?

I'll admit, I'm more wary of some of the new builds that have popped up over the past 3 years because I think many were rushed and corners were cut in order to acheive a quick completion and sale before the bubble burst but, per se, I would have no problems buying a "new build"... because who's to say that corners weren't cut on every other property that's already been built? I guess the real disadvantage of a new build is that it's got no history - at least the problems with an older building are a bit more apparent.

Like you sateted You were lucky,we owned a new build, disater it was, water leaking through the roof, boiler gone wrong, extractor hood didnt work, not all window locks works, yes small teething problems but all still what you dont expect from a new build house, its luck of the draw, some other homes had same and similar and some a lot worse problems than ours but some had no problems, but we didnt stay there long and now are in a old build house with dented walls(perhaps thats an exageration more like slight pot holes) and creaky floors but Id choose this house way above the other, will never buy a new build again ever but thats just us,we are way happier in our older house(cant hear the children in the bedroom next to yours anymore proper solid walls) nice big garden no longer a square patch, you probably would hate our old house but like you say as long as you like what you are living in then thats the main thing not what anyone else thinks.Hope you continue to be happy in your home and enjoy it.
