The person in the bank took the piece of paper and used the phone to set up the standing order. He was hoping to go into the bank and set it up but it could only be done over the phone or on the internet and he couldn't do that so the cashier did it for him.

Very difficult to prove that the bank was at fault then. Not saying they weren't just hard to prove it.

I typed sort code finder into google and it threw up a few sites this is the first one - Icant verify the integrity as I havent used but as the details arent yours and you are checking another persons possible account give it a try - It will help you if when you put both the account number and the wrong sort code it will tell you if there is such an account or not.

There are others as i said just use google and I hoped I helped in a small way.

I know it is difficult to prove I think that is going to be the problem, who is ever right where banks are concerned. The person who has had this money would have noticed after all these months

just try the sort code in the above site it is safe i guess as it the postcode finder service thts been around years - it will at least tell which bank if any its gone to and your armed with a little more info for the next phase to get your money back.

If it comes back as no such bank you are in a better place to get it back as its just in cyberspace and simply needs a recliam clawback procedure from your bank.

If you use this site & you find their is no such bank you also need to insist that you are compensated for their error. Your landlord would be quite right to ask for lost interest to be paid relating to this & you should also bear that in mind. If they still insist on not speaking to you at a higher level threaten them with the Financial Ombudsman 020 7964 0500
