My rent has been paid into wrong account!

I set up a new standing order to pay my rent last September. Today I have received a letter from my Landlord to say that he has not received this rent and has given us notice. I have checked my bank and all the rent payments have gone out in full when they are due. I have checked with my inline banking that I have his correct account and sort code.
The problem seems to be between the time that the payments left my bank account and did not arrive in his account
I phoned the bank and have found that they have 2 numbers in the sort code the wrong way round, should be 06 and they have 60.
I have asked for the money to be returned to my account today so that I can get this rent paid immediately but I have been told that they will have to look into it and ask for the money to be returned to them and then put into my account which could take 3 weeks or more. I have said I am not happy about this and have asked to speak to someone higher up, a Manager and was told that they are all busy and after insisting I speak to someone else I was promised a call within 48 hours which I don't think is good enough. This also means that for the next few days I have to carry all my paperwork, bank statements etc around with me when I go work etc in case they phone and sod's law is they will phone when I am at the check out at Tescos!.
As the amount is close on £5000, which is a lot to me and I do not have this amount to just pay it and then wait for the bank to sort themselves out how can I insist that the money is returned without delay or paid to my Landlord now.
I have phoned and left a message for my Landlord and I hope he believes me and doesn't just add this to his 1000 excuses for not paying the rent!!
Any ideas on how to speed this up as the bank don't seem to understand how urgent this is.

Phone the bank again, don't agree to them phoning you back tell them you'll hold on. Each time you don't get a sensible answer to your problem ask to speak to the employees supervisor. The trick is to keep holding on.
£5k is a lot of money to most people, not just you.HTH.....................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Seems a bit strange that the landlord didn't notice for six months?0

Landlord has about 60 properties and is a very nice landlord, he travels a lot sometimes for months at a time and only checks his account when he comes back, he has a good set up with contractors for repairs etc and it all runs smoothly.Loretta0 -
Can I just check, did you set up this standing order using online banking or did you ask the bank to set it up for you?
The reason I ask is to establish who entered the sort code incorrectly when the standing order was set up. If it was you then the Bank is not responsible and can only ask for the money to be returned by whomever it was sent to and this may take some time. If the bank set this up incorrectly then they are to blame and need to reimburse you immediately and chase the money up in their own time."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0 -

My husband went into the bank with the paritculars for payment which I typed and gave to him and the bank set it up. Because i don't trust anyone to do anything properly, from experience, I kept a copy on the computer so it is definitely their mistake.
Your 2nd paragraph was what happened and is what I said, several times, on the phone but after promising to sort it out in not less than 3 weeks I ranted a bit and was then told someone would phone me back in 48 hours. My local branch of the Alliance & Leicester has only one counter and I was going to camp out at it and stay until this was sorted.Loretta0 -
As it is the fault of A&L, I agree that the best way forward is for you to visit A&L and indicate that you will not be leaving the branch until the money is back in your account. The key is to be very courteous at all times but also very firm.
Good luck.0 -

So is the sort code shown on the online banking the same as the one on your typed instructions? Or are A&L paying the money to an account other than the one shown online?0 -

For the past 5 years I paid my rent myself by internet banking. Last September I opened another account with another bank just to pay the rent. My husband went into the bank with the details typed out showing the same details I had used to pay by internet banking. The person in the bank took the piece of paper and used the phone to set up the standing order. He was hoping to go into the bank and set it up but it could only be done over the phone or on the internet and he couldn't do that so the cashier did it for him.Loretta0 -

the numbers included in the sort code should be 06 but the bank have them down as 60 so i don't know where the money has been going. If this is someone's bank account how would I pursuade them to give the money back? If it is no one's bank account I am sure that it would be in some sort of suspense account but why hasn't it been returned because the bank did not know where it sould goLoretta0
