Does anyone know of a site where you can find out which cars are mainly in which ins group? I know you can find a car derivitive on parkers and go that way, but we want a low ins car for our 17yr old and thought by looking at the groups it may narrow our search!

That should help. But in general anything small with a 1 litre or smaller engine should be somewhere down the bottom, although AFAIK insurance group is not the only factor (I believe different cars in same group get different quotes) so do get insurance quotes too. For example the risk for a Corsa or Saxo is higher as boy racers (or should that be ricers) smash them into lamp posts etc, whereas this happens much less with a Suzuki Alto for example as they're less likely to try show their mates the car is cool etc.

Also on insurance quotes try adding parents as named drivers, even if they will never drive (with 17yr old as main driver of course) as this may bring down the quote, even if the parents never drive the car. Good luck.

Nice looking low insurance cars still tend to be pricey.

Get him a PUG UGLY banger unless he has £1200-1400 to spend on his insurance. Even then your probably only saving a few hundred quid!

Yes a good point lauren_1, you can instantly and easily save thousands on the car, whereas when it comes to insurance for a 17 year old it will always be high no matter what. £500 can pick you up more of a car than you might think - although it will probably be too old to be on parkers, and it might not have any "street cred". Who needs street cred when you can get from A to B, better than walking or a bus full of annoying chavs :D
