Using Amex with Paypal

PayPal statement:

"PayPal submits American Express transactions in USD, regardless of the currency of your transaction. If your payment or your card is not denominated in USD, we each apply currency conversion commission to the transaction. American Express will credit your American Express statement in an amount estimated to be at least equal to the fees applied to the transaction. We apologize for any inconvenience as we implement a new process to address this issue."

Which is correct?

Does anyone have any recent experience of Paypal using Amex i.e. does it cost any extra?

I have used Amex with PayPal twice in the last few days. In each case I gained a few pence after the credit for charges was applied.

I have made several purchases (high value items) and I'm not sure if I'm being ripped off or not....

Recent example:

Mattress Purchase - £358 via PayPal
Conversion via PayPal - $571.91

AMEX Charge $571.91 - £384.59
AMEX Refund $34.31 - £22.72

So the £358 item has actually cost me £361.87

Not really a problem as I've earned 5% cashback on this transaction (is that correct even with PayPal??) as opposed to my Egg Card which pays 1%.

So do I just switch back to my Egg Card once the 5% period is over?

Can goods actually become cheaper doing things this way via PayPal if the exchange rate is in our favor?

I've recently paid £12.60 via PayPal on my Amex
The Amex account shows:
5 Dec PAYPAL 19.22 USD £13.48
5 Dec PAYPAL/AMEX CNVRSN 1.15 USD £0.81

which is a balance of £12.67 paid - a loss of 7p :rolleyes: or 0.5%
so not actually worth it at the moment.
I did make a few pence on transactions earlier in the year.

If you're on 5% Amex cashback then it's still worth it.

Does anybody know please if using paypal with an AMEX card is still subject to AMEX's sterling to dollar conversion and if so is the difference still being refunded?

I need to make a paypal payment soon and it would really suit me to use my AMEX card. To further complicate matters I will be making a paayment in Australian Dollars. I qquite accept paypal's conversion rate from steerling to AU$ but will I lose out on second converstion into US$ ?

not any more. cards issues in the UK use sterling pounds for paypal transactions now.
