Upgrading my Citi Credit Card (cashback)

I currently have a Citi Platinum Visa Card which gives 1% cashback. I've had it for 4 years and theres no balance on it. Over the years it has served me well.

Recently saw the new Citi Shell Mastrcard which is pretty much the same as my card but with 3% cashback on Shell fuel and a few other motoring benefits.

Obviosuly, I want to upgrade. Basically, will they let me do it? Should I cancel the current one and then apply for the new one or get the new one and then cancel the current one??

Are there any issues with doing this (other than the usual credit score issues)?

You have to buy fuel from Shell (obviously) but that will earn you some more cashback. Citi should let you change no problem (as its not really an upgrade). Apply for it and then ask to cancel the old one. Should not be an issue at all.

I would not overvalue to the motoring benefits as they are are not that good.

The card used to have price protection (if an item got cheaper in 4 weeks you can claim back the difference) and extended warrenty (1 year extra) on electrical items but they stopped as no one was taking advantage of those. But I certainly did. So was and still is a winner.
