Help! Buying a fitted kitchen

Options
There doesn't seem to be a right board to put this on, anyway here goes....

After saving up for absolutely AGES, i've finally got enough to re-do the kitchen. i've decided on the kitchen i want, had it planned and everything is chosen. I've been given the cost by the firm and now it's time to think about a deposit and going ahead with the work. The thing is, do you think i could negotiate on the price a bit? Do you think its worth trying to knock 'em down a bit in true MSE style?

The kitchens gonna cost me £10k and i am in a position to pay cash if it is in my interest to do so (otherwise its on my cashback credit card :D ). I'm not in a position to sort out the electrics/get a tiler etc etc myself so i can't get them to do less work. The kitchen is in a sale and i've had 20% knocked off the units already. The firm i'm buying from is NOT a major national company but a reasonable sized local firm who do have a good reputation locally. I really want this kitchen but if i asked them to negotiate on price and they won't, i would be prepared to walk away from it (although i'd hate it!)

Any suggestions? Would it be unreasonable to see if they'll do me a deal? If so, how do it do it and what should i ask for?

The only thing i could think of is, is ask them to do me it a bit cheaper for cash because they have less costs than if i used a credit card. Other than this i was stuck as to what to ask - but i do have the brazen attitude to ask..

Any help please?

I came on here to ask for help with kitchens but in a slightly different vein! Would have been rude not to respond to your request first.
I would say 'yes' ask for a discount. Is the 20% the sale discount? I always believe that the discounts are a bit fixed anyway - everyone seems to have discounts at one time or another. I don't think you would have to walk away - I would think they expect people to haggle. Put it another way, OH runs his own business and offers bulk buy discounts and retail discounts, but only if the buyers ask for it!!
If you ask for it and they refuse - give yourself a day or two cooling off period to decide if you really do want the kitchen - if you do then go ahead. But no harm in asking. I think you have more of a chance with the haggling because they are NOT a major firm. The sales person should now how much leeway they have.

Thanks MSE for helping me budget and therefore increase payments from £30 per month to £150
  • Just remember - what have you got to lose by asking for a discount?

    Nothing.

But you have everything to gain.

By Kitchen standards thats a fairly sizeable order so I'd be surprised if the retailer turned his nose up at giving you even a small discount.

    Go for it ;)

I am glad about this tread. I am looking to get my loft converted and I am thinking about haggling. I will follow the advice so far and just ask for a discount. I will also mention that I am not paying for it with a credit card (not sure if people pay for such a large amount of money with a credit card anyway.. please comment on this MSEers)

The 20% discount could be for stock that they want to get rid of because they have more lastest colours and designs coming in. So don't let them say that you already have a 20% discount.

I am a bit scared to ask for a discount .. I don't know why .. I just do? Sometimes I think that if I do get a discount they will do a bit of cost cutting on the materials or workmanship to make up the money that they have lost... please comment on this if you know if this is true MSEers..

    Thanks
