Insurance for 15year old cats

Hi

Any suggestions. have had M&S for the last year and they paid out but I had no excess go renewal through and they have upped it to £50 plus 20% of treatment costs:eek: .

All suggestions and experiences welcome. Don;t want it to be cheap but then they never pay out.

Hi Edwarda, I found I had terrible trouble getting Insurance for a cat over 10. When the premium went up slightly I tried getting other quotes but they woulnd't even give me that. So, I stayed with the Insurance company I was with (Virgin Money) and then she developed diabetes and so had to stay with them, been with them 4 years now, she is 13 now and they still pay out for her diabetes each time I claim (about 2.5 years now).

If you are with M&S I would be tempted to stay with them, if they have already paid then they should pay out again as it is just a continuation of the policy you already have, you'll find it quite hard to get Insurance on a cat that old. But that is just my experience, apologies if others have had other experiences that prove me wrong.
  • I had cats that lived to 15 - we had our cover with PetPlan, premium did go up regularly as they got older - but I regularly checked with other providers who would have charged a lot lot more if I had chosen to switch when they became old. It is better to stay with your current provider than to try changing. All of them I think would charge more for the cover as your cats get older as the risk of claiming is increasing. But it is worth having the cover - we had 4 yrs of homeopathic treatment for one cat and the very best of everything when she developed cancer in late life.

  • p.s. we now have a 6 yr old rescue cat who was ill when we got her - we have claimed once in her first year with us, we are with M&S and first year no excess like you then on renewal we now pay £75 excess- Also it is so worth shopping around when you do have to pay an excess - our original vet was very pricy charging I think £14 or more for filling out your claim form but the one we are with now charges a fiver.
