How can you find what number plates excist ?

I'm looking for a private plate but don't see anything sutible on the dvla site (and others) is there anywhere you can check to see if the plate you want was ever made?

DVLA can tell you what has been issued, as they are the only ones that sell them from new.
Ring 0870 6000 142 and they can tell you whether it's available/already sold/possibly awaiting issue (e.g. 58 plates)

Enter the number you want to find into 'Single check buy now' dont worry you do not pay, if its been issued it will tell you what car its fitted to.
Of course if its there then its obviously being used by some one else.

just bear in mind that if a vehicle is scrapped and it has a cherished number attached to it...unless that number is retained or transferred to another vehicle before scrapping...the number dies with the car and will not be resurrected for use.
Too many people were going round salvage sites and noting down reg numbers and attempting to pass them off as their own.;)I am not a complete idiot - some parts are missing;)0
